What to know
Pruning doesn't have to mean losing the tree. Crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller while keeping its shape, crown thinning lets more light and wind through, and crown lifting removes the lowest branches to clear a path, a drive or a window.
Removing dead, diseased or crossing branches makes a tree safer in high winds. Topping a tree (cutting the top straight off) usually causes weak regrowth and decay, so a qualified tree surgeon will suggest a reduction instead.
Many trees are best pruned in late autumn and winter when they're dormant and birds aren't nesting, though some jobs can be done at other times. The tree surgeon will tell you what suits your tree.
